2013 Running Diary #2: Winter’s Rage

I’ve touched on this before, but there’s really no denying that winter this season is hell-bent on compensating for last year’s mild weather. This weak featured a just plain brutal stretch of weather, to the point where running in 27 degrees today felt positively warm. I checked the temperature after my run and honestly expected it to be at least 35. But I guess running in extreme cold will play with your perceptions. It’s all relative.

I did end up taking two days off this week, but I was planning it as a cutback week anyway, so that’s not a big deal. I ran four eight milers and got in twelve today for a total of 44, which is almost 30% lower than the past few weeks of 60 miles. But considering the weather and all, I’ll take it. It’s not like I only got in, say, 20 miles. I’ll continue my goal of maintaining my mileage and fitness throughout the winter, but I won’t start seriously upping my mileage or intensity until late February or early March.

Truth be told, there aren’t even a lot of good races (or races at all for that matter) in the winter, so not being in tiptop shape hardly concerns me. I did do a solid tempo on Wednesday (4 miles at 5:44 pace on a treadmill), but I know I’m not as fit as I was before Steamtown. I don’t really mind, though, because I know I have plenty of time. January’s nearly done and the temperatures will start rising soon. Spring will be here in no time.
